Being British and also living in Yorkshire for the last 15 years, I was already familiar with the magic power of the Tea leaf, how a cuppa solves and celebrates everything. Having a Mauritian father, I was also au fait with the soothing sounds of a stove top kettle brewing a strong aromatic chai.
Tea found me, in ceremony form though, only recently, it was one of the most intensely magical yet grounding moments of my life, I felt myself sinking into my meditation cushion, feeling so still, present, content and so thankful.
My busy mind just relaxed watching the ritual of tea preparation, the sound of water boiling, the aroma of brewing. I felt such deep nourishment drinking in this simple plant medicine and in receiving an offering served with such grace, beauty and care. Feeling such an immediate connection, with nature and with myself, I had a moment of such clarity
This ancient rite and tradition of gathering together, steeping tea leaves in boiling water and drinking was exactly the tonic I needed.
Just weeks later, I was sat in the heart of the Spanish Pyrenees learning all about Cha Dao, being taught to serve tea in the tradition and lineage of The Tea Sage Hut and then deepening my tea practice at the School of Tea and Zen in Taiwan.
drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if it is the axis on which the world revolves
For me the experience of serving and receiving tea in ceremony and in meditation has been transformative and life changing.
And so I invite you too to experience mindful tea drinking in ceremony and ritual.
